Cohoes School Superintendent Jennifer Spring relived the call she received from Assemblyman John McDonald on Saturday morning -- with an offer she says she couldn’t pass up.
“He said, 'What do you think about Cohoes High School being the site for hosting Hillary Clinton’s campaign rally?' " said Spring.
That, according to the Democratic presidential candidate's website, is now a reality. Clinton will be speaking to a crowd of around 1,500 people -- likely many local leaders, students and community members -- in the Cohoes High School gym Monday night. Doors will open at 4:15 p.m., with the event starting at 6:15 and lasting about an hour.
Cohoes Mayor Shawn Morse says he met with members from the Secret Service on Saturday, and while he couldn’t give specific details about their conversation, he says some city emergency personnel will be helping out.
“We had some dialogue about what resources we would give, like police officers, firefighters, so that the people who go there are safe [and we] make sure Hillary is safe and the community is safe,” said Morse.
It is still unclear what she will be doing before or after the event, but Friday, Assemblyman Carl Heastie said at some point Clinton will meet with Assembly members in the Capital Region.
Why come specifically to Cohoes and its high school, you may ask? Local leaders say it’s likely because of the platform she’s running on.
“We are a very warm community, very close community; we care about each other," said Spring.
“It’s about the message; what better place to be delivering a message about our future than a place of education?" asked Assemblyman John McDonald.
