The 'borough of parks' may soon get its own bike rental stations. NY1's Shannan Ferry filed this report.

Laura Sheridan says she wishes she could ride her bike to the St. George Ferry Terminal in the morning. However, the New Dorp resident says there are a few reasons why she doesn't.

"Because I wouldn't really trust leaving it there, and then, you know, sometimes I take the express bus home, or I get out of work late," Sheridan said.

However, things may change, and that will give Sheridan more options.

The city Parks Department and the National Parks Service are currently accepting proposals for a bike rental program on Staten Island.

"Sometimes, you feel like you want to get like, not a workout, but do something active in the morning, and instead of standing in a crowded train, it would be nice to take a bike," Sheridan said.

Similar to CitiBike, bike rental programs typically allow cyclists to pick up and drop off rental bikes at various docking locations instead of carrying around their own.

"I work in Manhattan, so as soon as I get off the bus in Manhattan, I use the bike, so it's a great resource to get to places faster," said Eugene Litman, a South Beach resident.

Along with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and the ferry terminal, Parks says the other pre-approved locations for the bikes include Fort Wadsworth, Miller Field and Conference House Park. Any additional locations must get approved by the city Parks Department or National Parks Service.

"A lot of people from Staten Island have their own bike., I don't know if we have the visitors and the population that would use the bikes," said Dennis Wittek, a Willowbrook resident.

The deadline for proposals is March 21. Parks will also hold a meeting for anyone interested in applying on March 2.
