HORNELL, N.Y. -- It’s been a touch-and-go recovery for a cat was found on the side of the road, drenched in gasoline and covered in burn marks.
"He's been on an antibiotic," said veterinary technician Cheri Erwin. "He was on a steroid for a litle bit just to help with the swelling. He's been on pain medication."
Erwin says she's never come across any cases this severe in the past.
"This ... exceeds anything I've seen before," she said.
The 14-year-old cat, renamed Cinder, is gradually recovering. He's slowly starting to eat and walk on his own, which he wasn't able to do earlier this week. But Erwin says his recovery will take a long time.
"He's still losing hair from the burns," she said. "It does take a really long time. He might not ever grow his hair back."
The Hornell Area Humane Society is asking for donations to help Cinder's recovery. Board member Sandra Rapp says they've already received nearly $3,000 from all over the world.
"We've had donations come in from Australia, Sweden, Finland, England," Rapp said. "It's just amazing, the power of social media."
When he's fully recovered, Cinder will be looking for his forever home to live the rest of his life. If you would like to donate, log on to www.hornellanimalshelter.org, click the donate button and it will take you to PayPal. Mark donations as "Frosty Fund."
