JACKSONVILLE--Camp Lejeune and Air Station New River will gradually phase in new handheld scanners called RAPIDGate. The scanners are designed to maintain safety and security.
"It's increased security for the Marines that live and their families that live aboard the installation as well as the individuals that work aboard the installation,” said Provost Marshals Office Operations Manager Steven Cox.
These new handheld scanners will scan, read, and verify government and state issued I.D. cards. This includes Department of Defense Common Access Cards, retired & military dependent cards, U.S. and Canadian driver's licenses and identification cards.
RAPIDGate shows a green bar at the top if you can access the base. It shows a red bar if you’re denied access.
"Folks that have been disbarred from the installations or are on the suspended list, the scanners will be able to access that information and will allow our gate guards, our sentries to have that information in their hands,” said Camp Lejeune/MCAS New River Public Affairs Specialist CPT Kristin Dalton.
Everyone with credentialed access to base will not be impacted, but in the next few months, non-military personnel such as vendors, contractors, sub-contractors and service providers who require frequent access to base are encouraged to enroll in the rapidgate program.
"All the tools and assets that the Marine Corps has, it just provides better security for us all,” added Cox.
Starting October 5th commuters should allow for additional time to enter Camp Lejeune and Air Station New River for the scanners to be used.
Visitors must still stop at the pass and ID center to obtain access to Marine Corps bases.
