BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo fire crews have sealed off a hole in the sidewalk on the city's East Side after a man fell through a grate there.

The grate covered an opening that was once an elevator the neighboring building used to get to the basement.

Witnesses on Fillmore Avenue said they heard a man jumping on the grate before falling through Sunday afternoon. Efforts to get him out hit a snag.

"Actually, his pants were stuck to one of the bars, so he couldn't get the bar off his pants," said witness Andre Clark. "So we were able to get that. I was able to remove that bar off of his pants so that he can get up, and he got up with no problem."

The man was guided through the basement of the building and walked away unharmed.
