VARYSBURG, N.Y. -- A line of strong storms Monday brought wind and rain to Western New York but damage appears to be minimal. For many people, hearing that a tornado warning was issued was scarier than the storm itself.

People in Wales, Varysburg and Warsaw said there was heavy, often blinding rain and a few claps of thunder.

One woman we spoke with off-camera said her friend was camped out in the basement with her pets waiting for the storm to pass.

Two other women we talked to say they were in Walmart when the rain started and after hearing the tornado warning, they decided to wait it out for about an hour until the downpour stopped.

"It got really dark, and we were in Walmart and were getting ready to leave," said Betty Osterman, a resident of the village of Wyoming. "Over my telephone came, there was a warning, and it poured. You could hardly see through the rain it was pouring so hard in the parking lot."

For residents of Warsaw, this storm and tornado warning were particularly nerve-wracking after flooding they saw two weekends ago, but the creeks, while moving swiftly, were all well below flood stage.
