MASSENA, N.Y. -- Cruise passengers may have thought they'd have a relaxing trip on the Saint Lawrence Seaway Thursday night.

Instead, their ship hit a concrete wall meant to prevent ships from hitting the Eisenhower lock door and water started to seep into the ship.

According to an emergency services official, 17 people on board received minor injuries.

"They were transported to Massena Memorial Hosptial, with family members. Most of those people have been accessed, treated, and are being released and we're going to be transporting them back here," said Michael LeCuyer, the St. Lawrence County director of emergency services.

And with the ship in tact, passengers and crew members spent the night on board.

"Right now, the ship is stabilized, the damage to the hull has been compartmentalized, there's not more water going into the ship," said LeCuyer.

While the goal is to get the cruise ship going again, the emergency services official says if repairs need to be done, the passengers will have to head back to their port of entry.

"They're all foreign nationals. And once they step foot on American soil they have to go through customs and immigration as well. But I think the plan is to return them to Montreal," said LeCuyer.

The ship will stay in the lock with both doors closed until it can be moved to a different location.

And according to a local emergency responder, the people on board seem calm, but anxious to get moving.
