A case of animal abuse in Liverpool is under investigation by the SPCA. The cat, named Callie, was shot almost two dozen times with a BB gun.  Mike Toper visited with Callie's family to see how her recovery is going.

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- On January 18, Callie the cat came inside walking awkwardly. Her owner, Amy Jenkins, noticed something was off.

"I went to find her and I picked her up and noticed she has all these wounds all over here and there was blood on my shirt. I thought maybe a dog or she got in a fight with a cat," said Jenkins.

Amy took Callie to the veterinarian. There, x-rays revealed that the feline was shot and had 23 BB's embedded in her. The vet believes the shooting was at close range because the blast also broke Callie's femur.

"They were able to remove two of them, but the other ones they didn't want to remove because it would have caused further damage," Jenkins said.

She was hit with numerous shells and now she walks with a limp. The bill came out to roughly $2,400. Currently, the SPCA is investigating the crime.

"If we are able to figure out who caused the injury to the animal, that will be a felony," said SPCA Executive Director Paul Morgan.

Friends of Amy's have started distributing flyers to try to find the person who shot the cat. For now, Amy and her children are just looking for Callie to make a speedy recovery.

"I just hope her leg heals okay. I hope it goes to normal," Jenkins said.

And while they look to catch the person who committed the act, Amy says she just wants to ensure the safety of the neighborhood.

"I just want to find who did it. Just for safety reason so it doesn't happen to anyone else. I just don't want anyone to get hurt," said Jenkins.

For now, you can find Callie indoors. And she always welcomes a hug, she is into being rubbed while she recovers.
