RALEIGH— Google is expected to make a major announcement this week, but company representatives are not saying what it is. Insiders believe the company will reveal bringing Google Fiber to the Triangle and Charlotte.

"It would be great if Google Fiber comes here," said Durham councilman Steve Schewel.

Google sent him an invitation to attend an announcement, but even he has to speculate. Google Fiber is a high-speed Internet service that provided through fiber optics. The service is already available in parts of Missouri, Texas, and Utah.

But Google faces stiff competition. Frontier Communications has already rolled out the service, and AT&T plans to do the same.

Time Warner Cable also offers the services to business customers and plans to add homes, releasing a statement:

It’s critical to point out Time Warner Cable Business Services already delivers 1 Gig and faster speeds on our network for our business customers. If a business requires more than a 50 Megabit service, and many do, we already offer symmetrical high speed fiber connections to meet their needs (and we deliver these speeds to more than 700 NC schools).

Our most popular tiers of speed offer the best value across the whole Triangle market not just select portions of the market, connecting multiple devices in the home with consistent high-speed Internet --- at a lower cost than most wireless plans or Google’s one-size offering.  And while Google Fiber talks about what it plans to offer, TWC is up and running today as well as innovating for tomorrow with next-generation cable plant, modems and more so we can bring faster speeds and exciting new services.

In July, TWC announced it will begin transforming the TV and Internet service experience in seven markets in 2015 – including the Triangle and Charlotte areas. This plan is referred to as TWC Maxx. Maxx is underway now in NYC and Los Angeles.
