NATIONWIDE -- A Buffalo-based debt collection company has been named in a federal indictment, accused of wrongfully taking more than $31 million from thousands of people across the United States.

The US Attorney’s Office in New York City says Four Star Resolution LLC is at the center of the largest debt collection scheme every prosecuted.

Prosecutors say Travell Thomas, the co-owner, CEO and president of the company, in addition to 14 other defendants in the case, are accused of trying to trick victims into making payments to the company by giving out false information between 2010 and February of this year.

Officials say in some cases, the company claimed to be affiliated with law enforcement and local government agencies and said warrants would be issued if payments were not made.

Charges the defendants face range from conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.

The US Attorney’s Office is trying to make contact with potential victims.
