TAMPA, Fla. — The man accused of firing shots on a crowded Ybor City street last month will remain in jail until his trial.

On Monday, Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Robin Fuson agreed that Tyrell Phillips should remain in jail.

Phillips, 22, was in a Tampa courtroom for about three hours Monday as attorneys gave their arguments why he should or should not remain behind bars.

Prosecutors heard from two law enforcement detectives, an assistant medical examiner and an eyewitness to the shooting.

The state attorney’s office argued that Phillips is still a danger to the community, presenting music videos of Phillips rapping and waving guns at the camera.

Evidence, testimony and videos from the night of the shooting were presented in court.

Two people were killed and 16 others were injured in the Oct. 29 shooting. Phillips is charged with a single count of second-degree murder related to Elijah Wilson’s death.

Wilson, 14, died at the scene in the shooting. The second victim, 20-year-old Harrison Boonstoppel, a bystander who suffered a gunshot to the back, died at an area hospital.

According to Spectrum Bay News 9’s partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, police found bullet shell casings from three different guns near where one of the victims was found dead.

Videos shown during testimony contradicted Phillip’s claim of self-defense.

On Nov. 14 police made another arrest in the case, arresting a 14-year-old boy on firearms charges.

Tampa police continue to investigate the shooting.
