GREEN BAY, Wis.— The Green Bay Packers are putting the finishing touches on Lambeau Field ahead of Sunday’s regular-season home opener.

The team’s director of public affairs Aaron Popkey says the organization has worked to make sure both teams have what they need, and the broadcast crews have everything they need to hold the game during the pandemic.

“A lot of preparation went into what’s going to take place,” Popkey says.

The team also upgraded the stadium’s look ahead of the network broadcast by placing tarps over the first eight rows of bleachers around the bowl. Popkey says the tarps are a visual indicator of how the pandemic has impacted daily life in Wisconsin.

“All of us in general, going back to March, it’s just been a constant adjustment and just being able to engage in the new ways of doing things, and that’s the same here in the organization,” he says.

As for the atmosphere at Lambeau on game day, Popkey says he believes there will still be a buzz in the air.

“Even though we won’t have fans at the game on Sunday there will still be I think a great energy in the community that comes with having a game,” says Popkey.

He says the team is continuing the monitor the pandemic. They plan to re-evaluate pandemic conditions as they pertain to safety before deciding whether to allow fans to fill the bowl after the first two fan-less home games.

“Hopefully we can get these numbers down where we can be in a situation where we could consider having fans at games,” Popkey says. “I think the general message there is just encourage people to continue to mask and proper hygiene and all those things.”
