Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he was not expecting Fuentes to attend the dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort and claimed he didn’t know anything about Fuentes, who led “Stop the Steal” rallies after the 2020 presidential election in support of Trump’s false claims about widespread fraud.
“This past week, Kanye West called me to have dinner at Mar-a-Lago,” said Trump, who is running for president again in 2024. “Shortly thereafter, he unexpectedly showed up with three of his friends, whom I knew nothing about. We had dinner on Tuesday evening with many members present on the back patio. The dinner was quick and uneventful. They then left for the airport.”
Trump’s acknowledgement of the dinner followed reports from The Daily Beast and the entertainment website Consequence as well as a social media video posted by Ye describing the dinner.
In the video, Ye said he asked Trump to be his running mate in the 2024 presidential election, which Trump was “perturbed about,” according to the rapper.
Ye claimed Trump “started basically screaming at me at the table telling me I was going to lose.”
“I mean, has that ever worked for anyone in history?” Ye said. “I'm like, ‘Whoa, whoa, hold on, hold on, Trump. You're talking to Ye.’”
The rapper also implied that Trump made a derogatory about Ye’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, and that the former president “is really impressed with Nick Fuentes.”
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Fuentes is a white nationalist livestreamer and an outspoken admirer of fascists such as Benito Mussolini. The 24-year-old has made a number of antisemitic comments, has denied the Holocaust happened, has attended the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was reportedly on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Ye has been under fire in recent weeks over a series of antisemitic comments he has made, leading to social media companies locking him out of his accounts and Adidas terminating its partnership with him.
The Democratic National Committee quickly attacked Trump for meeting with Fuentes.
“If it was any other party, breaking bread with Nick Fuentes would be instantly disqualifying for Trump,” DNC spokesman Ammar Moussa said in a statement. “The most extreme views have found a home in today’s MAGA Republican party.”
