A L&L Hawaiian Barbecue on Maui has been closed after a health inspector discovered a cockroach infestation, according to a Hawaii Department of Health news release.
DOH’s Maui Food Safety Branch issued a red “closed” placard to the L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in the Maui Marketplace Food Court at 270 Dairy Road in Kahului on Wednesday, during a routine follow-up inspection. The plate lunch spot is operated by Maui L & L Food Inc.
On Monday, DOH conducted a routine inspection, issuing a yellow “conditional” placard after the discovery of cockroaches. The inspector told the eatery to have professional pest control treatment completed before the follow-up inspection.
However, during the follow-up inspection on Wednesday, the inspector observed more cockroaches, including roaches that were laying egg cases within the walk-in refrigerator and freezer door seals. According to DOH, it was an active, breeding roach population, which posed an imminent health hazard.
DOH told the L&L at Maui Marketplace Food Court that it must meet the following requirements to reopen:
- Contact a professional pest control company and establish a pest treatment and monitoring plan in order to eradicate the cockroaches
- Seal and repair all cracks and crevices along the kitchen floor and walls
- Prepare procedures that demonstrate control over pest prevention and control
By Friday, the establishment is required to provide an update and timeline for completing the above list to DOH.
