Portland Police on Wednesday said they still don't have a suspect in a shooting that occured Monday, just days after the department announced steps to curb an increase in violent crime in the city.

The latest incicent happened in the city's historic Old Port, a popular tourist destination, early Monday morning.

According to police, two officers on foot patrol near 43 Wharf St. responded to hearing gunshots just after 1 a.m. Monday. They found a 34-year-old man had been shot several times.

Police said the officers also found a 22-year-old Portland woman at the nearby intersection of Fore and Union Streets who had also been shot in the same incident. Both victims were taken to Maine Medical Center. Police described their injuries as “serious.”

On Friday, Interim Police Chief F. Heath Gorham announced a plan to cut back on traffic details to allow for a fuller roster of foot patrol officers citywide.

“The goal is to show a presence, to let the public understand we’re out there, we understand the importance and we understand that they are concerned about what they’re seeing in their community,” Gorham said Friday.

As of Friday, police reported seven shootings in the city so far this year resulting in two people being killed.

There have also been 17 stabbings reported so far in 2022 alone, a 31% increase over the number reported in the same period last year.
