The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 dropped to 215 on Friday, capping a week of fluctuating case rates and few deaths, according to data from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Of those hospitalized on Friday, 28 are in intensive care and two are on ventilators. The state also reported 518 new COVID cases on Friday and one additional death, a man 80 years old or older, in Sagadahoc County.

Masks are now recommended indoors regardless of vaccination status in nine of Maine’s 16 counties classified as high risk by the federal CDC. The high-risk counties are: Cumberland, Oxford, Androscoggin, Penobscot, Lincoln, Knox, Sagadahoc, Hancock and Aroostook.

Since the pandemic began in Maine, there have been 258,267 cases, with 186,350 confirmed and 71,917 listed as probable. Deaths stand at 2,338, with only three being recorded this week.
