Coronavirus hospitalizations rose again in Maine on Friday, with one new death reported and 470 new cases.

There are now 143 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the state, including 34 in critical care and five on ventilators. Maine last saw this many hospitalizations on March 8, as the delta and omicron waves of earlier this year tailed off.

The person reported to have died on Friday was a woman over age 80 from Oxford County. The state’s death toll since the pandemic began stands at 2,283, with 244,062 total cases.

One of the new cases reported Friday was Gov. Janet Mills, whose office announced Thursday that she had tested positive. She has only mild symptoms and was prescribed antiviral medication while isolating.
