PORTLAND – Portland’s Park, Recreation and Facility Department unveiled the city’s first public bike park on Wednesday at Riverton Trolly Park.
The bike park was a collaboration between the city, Portland Parks Conservancy, Maine Trail Builders and the Greater Portland New England Mountain Bike Association.
“We’re starting to bring life back to this park,” said Ethan Hipple, director of Portland Parks, Recreation and Facilities.
The project, costing upwards of $500,000, consists of three jump lines starting with beginning and going to advanced leading to the skills course.
The effort was funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant, a federal program that helps state and local governments in the development of public outdoor recreation, and by local Portland businesses and organizations. Each entity funded half of the project.
“There’s so many things to value in a park: beauty and nature and woods,” said Hipple. “But one of the things it can do is bring people together and when I see little kids, teenagers, adults all coming together to have fun, to build skills. To me, that’s what it’s all about.”
