SAN DIEGO — In 2019, $48.3 billion in goods came in through the San Diego ports of entry, according to the San Diego Association of Governments. However, the existing ports do not meet the demand and wait times for trucks at the border are rising. They’re expected to exceed six hours by 2040, according to the association.

But in the last 14 years, CalTrans and the association have been working on a project that will not just reduce wait times at the border but will keep them to 20-30 minutes, no matter the time of day.
