LOS ANGELES — Just days after Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Dodger Stadium was opening as one of the largest vaccination sites in the country, the county opened five new super sites with the task of vaccinating residents 65 years and older.

The super vaccination sites include the Pomona Fairplex, the Forum in Inglewood, Cal State University Northridge, the County Office of Education in Downey, and Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia.

Each location has the capacity to vaccinate up to 4,000 people per day. The goal is to vaccinate half a million L.A. County residents in the next month. The entire process is done from the car.

"People can expect anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for the whole process to go," said Jesus Ruiz with the L.A. County CEO's office.

First, each car lines up to check in, where people must show proof of age and residency. They then drive to the vaccination area where clinicians administer the shot before they head to a separate holding area.

"They will be observed for about 15-20 minutes to see if they have any side effects to the vaccine. After that, they will receive a card saying which vaccine they received on what day and when their follow up appointment is," Ruiz said.

The vaccines are completely free, regardless of a person’s immigration status or insurance coverage, but appointments are required. L.A. County Public Health said there are adequate vaccine supplies to get through this week’s appointments, but it has no idea how many new doses it will get next week.

In addition to the county run sites, dozens of pharmacies across the county have also registered to provide vaccinations. Residents can also check with their healthcare provider.

However, the vaccination efforts all depend on the available supply. Local health officials hope President Joe Biden makes good on his promise to distribute 100 million doses of vaccine nationwide during his first 100 days in office.
