“This is an opportunity to come inside, get services you need and deserve, get well again, and get back on your feet,” said Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell.

The list includes the Echo Park Recreation Complex, the current home to art and music classes and a community baseball league.

Many of those services have already been put on hold, as city leaders urge residents to avoid large groups.

Sources familiar with conversations say the city hopes to expand the list to 42 in the coming weeks, bringing about 6,000 homeless people inside.

The shelters will be staffed by city employees, who will be trained by the Department of Public Health and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, or LAHSA.

The city will also enlist help from the Red Cross. Many of the recreation centers had already been identified for use during a disaster, such as an earthquake.
