LOS ANGELES — The deadline is quickly approaching for LA Metro’s Crenshaw-LAX neighborhood art contest, which seeks young artists inspired by the neighborhoods of the new line’s eight new stations.

Entries are due by Monday, July 12.

What You Need To Know

  • LA Metro's Crenshaw-LAX transit project art contest ends July 12

  • The contest is open to high school students between 9th and 12th grade

  • Eight winners will be chosen; winners will receive $500 each, as well as a set of commemorative pins inspired by the winning artwork

  • The Crenshaw-LAX transit project, originally planned for a 2019 opening, has no set opening date

The art contest seeks to find eight high school-aged artists, in grades 9 through 12, who will submit artwork and a brief statement explaining how their piece celebrates the “unique character of one of the neighborhoods” served by the Crenshaw-LAX line.

Those artworks will then become the inspiration for eight commemorative pins that will be given out to the public in celebration of the project’s opening.

Winning artists will also win a $500 award, a certificate and a complete set of commemorative pins.

Once completed, the Crenshaw-LAX Transit Project will stretch from the E Line (previously known as the Expo Line) to the C Line (previously the Green Line), with another connection planned to LAX’s Automated People Mover. The new stations will serve Crenshaw, Inglewood, Westchester, and other South LA neighborhoods, from a station at Expo-Crenshaw to Aviation-Century station.

The artists are asked to consider what their neighborhood means to them, what makes their neighborhood unique and how the rail stations will positively impact their neighborhood.

The Crenshaw-LAX project was originally planned for a 2019 opening, but complications have pushed the project back. According to a Metro spokesperson, no opening date has been set.
