This weekend marks the final two days in the month of March, and spring has definitely sprung around the Carolinas. Pollen is flying, more rumbles of thunder are being heard at times, and temperatures are warming up.

With all of that said, I thought we could look at what the 'average' temperatures are for this time of the year. Statistically, the colder time of the year runs from the very end of December into early January, and it's all uphill from there until we reach our warmest statistical period, which occurs July into early August.

Also, keep in mind we derive our average highs and lows based on a 30-year average of all of the highs and lows on a given date (the current period of record is 1981-2010).

So, as of the end of March:

  • The average Charlotte high has warmed all of the way up to 68 with an average low of 43.
  • The average Raleigh high is also 68 with an average low of 43.
  • The average Greensboro high is 65 with an average low of 43.
  • The average Wilmington high is 70 with an average low of 47.
  • The average Hatteras high is 62 with an average low of 48.

So there you go..... we've some a long way since mid-winter, but still lots more warming to go as we get deeper into the warm weather months.
