With the goal to enhance public safety, the Maui Police Department will host a Gun Buyback event on June 14 in collaboration with the Department of Law Enforcement, the Office of the Governor and the Department of the Attorney General.
Individuals can turn in unwanted firearms — no questions asked, and no identification required — from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maui County Service Center at 110 Alaihi Street in Kahului.
All firearms must be unloaded and securely placed in a container or box in the trunk of the person’s vehicle and individuals must remain in the vehicle while law enforcement personnel remove the firearms.
For turning in handguns, rifles, shotguns, bump stocks and Glock switches, participants will receive a $100 gift card. A $200 gift card will be given to those who turn in automatic firearms of any type, semi-automatic assault-type rifles and ghost guns.
Limitations include:
- Ammunition will not be accepted
- Each individual may turn in an unlimited number of firearms but can only receive a maximum of three gift cards
- Licensed firearms dealers and active or retired law enforcement personnel are not eligible to participate
- Officials reserve the right to refuse any firearm or issue a gift card at their discretion
Free gun locks will be distributed while supplies last.
The Gun Buyback event is part of a wider effort to reduce gun violence and accidental shootings by removing unwanted and dangerous weapons from homes and streets.
