RALEIGH -- It's hard to believe the newest Miss North Carolina will be crowned in a matter of days, but to celebrate, the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh is welcoming a display that honors the scholarship pageant's rich history.

From June 13 through September 4, 2017, the museum will feature a summertime lobby-case exhibit, honoring the memories and legacies of the more than 27,000 young women who have gone head to head for the title at the local and state level.

The exhibit will be on display through the Miss America pageant and feature mementos and clothing, a video and awards from a handful of pageant winners.

Some examples of items featured at the exhibit are:

  • Miss North Carolina 1965, Penelope Clark, of Sanford's gown and crown
  • Miss North Carolina 1966, Nannette Jackson Minor, of Charlotte's a lapel pin that she handed out to thousands during her reign
  • An evening gown, scepter and Miss America USO Troupe badges from Miss North Carolina 1977, Kathy Fleming, of Hamptonville's reign
  • Miss North Carolina 2007, Jessica Jacobs, of High Point's gown and crown
  • Never-before-exhibited photos, biographies, pageant history and historical articles, including the Miss America finalist trophy of Miss North Carolina 1991, Jennifer Smith, of Mt. Airy

This year’s queen will be crowned on June 24, 2017 in Raleigh’s Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.
