Volunteeers with Spectrum Housing Assist came together Saturday to help a member of the Pleasant Valley community.

Their efforts were focused on the home of a community resident and homeowner of 24 years. The exterior of her home needed repairs to the chimney and windows, as well as landscaping work — and the repairs came just in time to ensure the house would be ready to face the winter. The efforts of the volunteers are part of a collaboration between Spectrum and local nonprofits like Rebuilding Together. Spectrum Housing Assist aims to improve 50,000 homes by 2020, but for the volunteers, helping even one person is gratification enough.

“It gives people a method to pitch in, and actually help the community. It's a win-win for the community, the home is improved, and it's a good activity for the volunteers to help the community," said Larry Theisen, a volunteer.

Since Spectrum Housing Assist’s inception, nearly 5,000 volunteers have donated more than 35,000 hours of their time, and improved more than 25,000 homes.
