OLEAN, N.Y. -- Jeff Anastasia's coaching resume at Olean is impeccable. With 528 wins, 11 sectional crowns, five trips to the state final four, and 2008 state championship, come March he'll officially be a New York State Basketball Hall of Famer.
"It's very, very humbling to me. There's so many great, outstanding coaches across New York State it's just unbelievable that I'm being inducted," said Anastasia.
With all that Anastasia's achieved, his players say his love for hoops still burns immensely. It's that passion which they believe truly puts him in a league of his own.
"The will to win, he always tells us and shows us that he is the most competitive person in the gym at all times and that helps him bring out the Ws," said Olean guard Derek Schmidt.
"What people don't see is how much time he puts in outside of practice. He spends hours just scouting other teams and making sure we're ready," said Olean guard Jake Cavana.
The trophy cases at Olean are full of evidence that Anastasia is a hall of fame basketball coach, but it's what he does for his players off the court that has them saying he is a first ballot hall of fame person.
"If we ever had a problem in school or outside in our personal life, Coach A was someone you could call at any hour, talk to him about any topic, and he would give you advice. He just really cares, he truly cares about every kid that comes through that program," said former Olean forward Wil Bathurst.
"I love him, he is a great coach, and I just feel special that I get to play for him," said Olean forward Elijah Ramadhan.
The love for his student-athletes reaches beyond just the players. St. Bonaventure's men's head coach Mark Schmidt has had three sons play for Coach A.
"He has a passion for the game, he really works at it. He cares about his players, he calls them on graduation. He runs a program that a lot of people look at a really successful. He does it the right way, he treats the kids in the right manor, he coaches them well," said Schmidt.
March 12 and 13 could be a "truly special" weekend according to Anastasia. Not only does he get inducted Sunday, but his unbeaten and top ranked Huskies have hopes of playing for the Class B crown on Saturday.
