With windy and wet weather hitting much of the state, Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Division of Consumer Advocacy reminded residents to call 911 when near downed power lines or electric utility poles that are sparking.
The 911 dispatchers will then notify the electric utility and a troubleshooter will be dispatched, according to a DCCA news release.
DCCA also advised residents to never touch a downed power line or attempt to move it, and to always assume it is energized.
The state agency also encouraged residents to report non-emergency concerns, such as overgrown vegetation near power poles, which can cause safety hazards, directly to the electric utility company. Other safety concerns may involve electric utility equipment on utility poles; This document can help with identifying electric utility equipment. After the electric utility company has been notified, a troubleshooter will assess the risk and remove the potential hazard.
