In this Healthy Living report, Time Warner Cable News’ Kristen Shaughnessy highlights the benefits of using natural and organic skincare products.

It is not just important what you put in your body. It is also important what you use on your body.

"You can't have a big plastic bottle full of fluid and not expect there to be preservatives in there," says Daniel Grunes of Taproot Organics

Grunes’ Taproot Organics is a line of organic skin products. He makes everything from scratch using certified organic or natural food-grade ingredients.

"You look at your average body wash, you're looking at things like synthetics surfactants, fragrance oils, preservatives," he syas.

"We know we absorb things through our body, so what you put on the outside of your body is just as important as what you put on the inside of your body," says Karen Seiger, author of "Markets of New York."

Grunes says his restaurant experience actually helps guide the process in determining what customers want.

"Having a restaurant pedigree behind me, I think of every product that I'm making as if it was food, as if it was a dining experience,” he says. “I think of first the visual impression. It has to be appealing. I can put out ten blobs of brown, they can be amazing for you, but you're not going to want to use them. Visually it has to be attractive."

Taproot Organics has everything from shampoos, soaps, to shaving and joint therapy products. Grunes says each product has aromatherapy benefits and a message.

"Each one has its own personality, so that by the time you actually hold my products and you get a chance to inhale you're experiencing what I anticipated you would experience," he says.

Grunes says organic products are not just good for the customer but everyone involved in the products' creation.

"If a farm worker is sowing seeds of GMO-doused in chemical fertilizers, they have to wear HAZMAT suits. There is something about that that just doesn't ring as healthy and true to me," he says.

Grunes say he prides himself on using ingredients that are environmentally, ecologically and economically responsible.
