Brian McInnis covers Hawaii’s sports scene for Spectrum News. Brian has been a sports reporter in Hawaii for more than 14 years, covering a wide range of events spanning the college, high school, and professional ranks.

Brian began his sports writing career at what was then the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, working his way from a part-time clerking position to general assignment reporter to the beat writer of the University of Hawaii basketball. He remained through the merger with the Honolulu Advertiser that created the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and reported on some of the most noteworthy events to happen in the history of UH hoops — the firing of a head coach due to an NCAA investigation, followed by a stunning turnaround of fortunes and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory less than two years later.

Brian tried something new during the pandemic, becoming a wide-ranging business reporter at Pacific Business News for close to 12 months before returning to the sports realm with Spectrum News in 2021.

Brian was born and raised on Oahu and still resides on his beloved Windward side. The Kailua High School and University of Hawaii graduate dabbles in gaming, trivia, podcasting, and binge-watching the latest hit pop culture show in his free time.
