The color red will illuminate Honolulu Hale, the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena, and the Honolulu Fire Department from sundown on April 27 to sunrise on May 4, following the request of Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi in recognition of Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters, which honors firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
This year, the City and County of Honolulu will pay special tribute to Jeffrey Fiala, a 25-year-old Honolulu firefighter who died while responding to a McCully house fire on January 6, 2025.
“The Honolulu Fire Department is still mourning the tragic loss of one of our very own, Firefighter Jeffrey Fiala,” said Fire Chief Sheldon K. Hao in a statement. “This year’s Light The Night for Fallen Firefighters is deeply felt as we honor and illuminate the memory of Jeff and all fallen firefighters for their ultimate sacrifice in service to others.”
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation created Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters to mark the 25th anniversary of the foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Since its creation, Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters has expanded to include landmarks, businesses, fire departments and families lighting their homes in red in order to honor the fallen and their families.
“We are forever grateful for the courage and sacrifice of Jeff Fiala and all the firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect our community,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “Lighting our iconic city buildings in red is a powerful reminder of their heroism and a tribute to their families who have sacrificed so much.”
The City encouraged residents and businesses to take part by lighting their homes and buildings in red from April 27 to May 4 as a symbol of gratitude and remembrance.
