Catholic Charities Hawaii broke ground and conducted a blessing ceremony on Friday for Hale Pilina, a new affordable housing complex for Maui residents.
The nearly five-acre lot, site of the future complex at 150 South Puunene Avenue, will hold two, three-story buildings and two, four-story buildings with ample space and amenities to support families. The complex is a project of CCH’s development arm, Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation.
The blessing was conducted by Bishop Larry Silva, Diocese of Honolulu. State of Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation Executive Director Dean Minakami, Mahina Martin of the Office of Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen, Catholic Charities Hawaii CEO and President Tina Andrade, and Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation Executive Director Denise Iseri-Matsubara provided remarks.
“The need for affordable housing across Maui has never been greater,” said Andrade in a release. “Hale Pilina represents more than just a housing initiative. It embodies hope, healing, and our dedication to supporting the people of Maui as they rebuild their lives and communities.”
Half of the 178 apartments will be one-bedroom units, the other half will be two-bedroom units. Tenants will include qualified families earning up to 60% of the area median income. For the first two years of the project, families affected by the Maui wildfires will be given priority.
Completion of Hale Pilina is expected during the second quarter of 2027, with occupancy by the end of the same year.
Maryl Group Construction Inc. is the general contractor; architect of the project is Design Partners Incorporated.
Project financing was provided by Federal and State Low Income Housing Tax Credits, State of Hawaii Rental Housing Revolving Fund, County of Maui Affordable Housing Fund, and County of Maui HOME Fund.
