CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Hillary Clinton counted on New York state and in return, got a decisive primary win Tuesday over her opponent, Bernie Sanders.
"It was huge, not only in the double digit victory margin, but I think it was also huge to help further define the math landscape of the rest of the primary season," said Mayor Sam Teresi, D-Jamestown.
However, in the three western-most counties of the 23rd Congressional District, the numbers did not add up in her favor.
"Very exciting. I think it's important for all of us to recognize that Bernie Sanders is in for the long haul. He's demonstrated his stamina," said Nancy Bargar, Lakewood-Busti Democratic Committee Member.
Sanders beat Clinton in Allegany County 59 percent to 41 percent; in Cattaraugus County 58 percent to 42 percent and in Chautauqua County 54 percent to 46 percent.
Bargar canvassed area neighborhoods prior to the primary and credits voters of all ages for standing up against the establishment.
"I think a lot of the Democrats thought it was a foregone conclusion Mrs. Clinton was going to be the winner and so they stayed home, and I think the people who were in Bernie's camp recognized this was make or break and they really had to get out," said Bargar.
"It's not disappointing at all because I think the contest thats been occurring between Senator Sanders and Secretary Clinton ultimately is raising the enthusiasm and the participation factor of all Democrats," said Teresi.
Teresi recently supported a Clinton rally in the city, yet says looking beyond the numbers, Sanders has brought a lot of people into the process.
"Which I think ultimately is going to be good for the general election for whoever is carrying the Democratic banner in November," said Teresi.
The Chautauqua County Democratic Committee endorsed Clinton earlier this month.
