1. OSU Doctoral Student Fights To Find Cure for Cancer

For Monica Mannings, whose grandmother was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, the fight to find a cure is personal. The OSU Ph.D. student is part of the Pelotonia Fellowship Program, which funds multidisciplinary, cutting-edge cancer research. Last year the fundraising bike ride pledged more than $102 million to launch the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology. Many experts agree immuno-oncology is the next frontier in cancer research. 

2. BBQ Business Sees Success During COVID

Sweets and Meats BBQ is in its sixth year of business, but the pandemic brought about unexpected challenges. The business has had more than 160 events cancel since March, leaving it nearly $500,000 in the red. But changing its business model has helped keep iit afloat. Online ordering and curbside pickup now accounts for 50 percent of the company’s restaurant business.

3. Cincinnati Food Rescue Expands as La Soupe Opens New Location

in 2014. Suzy DeYoung, a nationally renowned chef and restauranteur, left behind the for-profit side of her career to see how she could address two industry-wide issues at once: food waste and food insecurity. So, she created  the nonprofit La Soupe — a food-rescue facility that takes leftover or unsold food and prepares meals for food-insecure families. The company recently settled into a larger space, giving them more room to cook, pack and store food.
