TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Zoo announced on Friday that an 80-year-old Galapagos tortoise, Emerson, has died.

In a post on their social media, the zoo said he’s had more “intensive medical management” since he had a suspected heart disease diagnosis a few years back.

“Recognizing the seriousness of Emerson’s condition, the Zoo’s dedicated team worked diligently with a veterinary cardiologist and veterinary reptile experts to ensure that Emerson received the best possible care, prioritizing consistent daily monitoring and medical administration,” the post reads.

However, his health continued to decline. The zoo said they made the tough decision to euthanize the animal humanely.

“Emerson holds a special place in the hearts of Toledo residents, who have admired his majestic presence and gentle nature,” the post reads. “Since his arrival in 2014 from another accredited zoo, he captivated visitors with his impressive size of over 500 lbs. His caregivers described him as an intelligent tortoise who enjoyed neck scratches from keepers, basking in the sun and the occasional celery snack.”
