COLUMBUS, Ohio — Less than a month after being selected for the job, the Ohio Department of Education superintendent turned in his resignation.

Steve Dackin, superintendent of public instruction for ODE, resigned from the position June 3 after being approved for the position May 10.

In his resignation letter, Dackin said he dedicated his life’s work to public education, and said it was an honor to serve on the State Board of Education.

He said concerns surrounding his acceptance of the superintendent of public instruction position were raised.

“I don’t want ‘revolving door’ questions to distract from the important work ahead for schools, educators and especially the children,” he said. “Children whose critical learning years have been disrupted by the pandemic need to be the focus of all our time, focus and creativity.”

In February, Dackin resigned from his position as vice president of the board to apply for the superintendent position. Prior to his resignation, Dackin was in charge of the board’s search for the superintendent, Cleveland.com reported. He did not comment in response to an inquiry from Spectrum News about his transition from leading the search to being a candidate.

Dackin said he would refuse compensation for his service in the position.

In May, the state board approved a resolution setting Dackin’s salary at $215,000 with the ability to receive a performance bonus of up to $35,000.

State Board of Education President Charlotte McGuire announced Dackin’s departure in a news release.

“Today, I received notice from Stephen D. Dackin of his resignation from the position of superintendent of public instruction,” McGuire said. “Dr. Stephanie Siddens will serve as interim superintendent of public instruction effective immediately until the State Board can appoint her as Interim Superintendent at the Board’s June meeting. I am confident that together we will continue the important work in support of Ohio’s children, families and future.”
