COLUMBUS, OH— The City of Columbus has agreed to pay the family of Andre' Hill $10 million after Hill was shot and killed by a former Columbus Division of Police officer last December.

Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein announced the settlement, the largest in the city's history, in a press release Friday.

“We understand that because of this former officer’s actions the Hill family will never be whole,” said Klein. “No amount of money will ever bring Andre’ Hill back to his family, but we believe this is an important and necessary step in the right direction.”

In addition to the financial terms laid out in the agreement, the city also agreed to rename the gymnasium located inside the Brentnell Community Center the Andre’ Hill Gymnasium.

The city said the name change will be completed by the end of this year.

Hill was shot and killed by CPD Officer Adam Coy on December 22, 2020, after officers responding to a 911 call came in contact with Hill in a garage on Oberlin Drive. Hill was unarmed when he was shot.

Coy told investigators he believed the cellphone Hill was holding was a gun.

Coy was terminated by the City of Columbus and now faces felony charges of murder, felonious assault and reckless homicide in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.

“The Hill family and their legal team want to thank the City of Columbus and its leaders for doing the right thing by agreeing to a financial resolution with the family and renaming the Brentnell Community Center Gymnasium," said attorneys representing Hill’s family. “Now all those involved can begin to heal.”

The agreement will move to Columbus City Council for a vote on Monday, May 17.
