People in Columbus were glued on their screens watching the Vatican channel. One Catholic from Columbus shared her reaction when she found out a U.S.-born pope is replacing pope Francis.

“Our political climate right now, honestly, there’s a lot of friction between the parties,” Mary Ward said. “So, I’m looking for someone that will inspire and unite the people.”

Another Catholic said finding out the new pope is from America brought another layer of hope.

“I was very proud, very excited,” Karen Helm said. “I think America, especially right now, could use this uplifting, this connection a sense of community.”

In the meantime, it’s not only Catholics who are reacting to the news.

People from other religions are also having a reaction. A Serbian Orthodox said the pope is an important figure to the entire world.

“It’s such an exciting day for the United States and for the Catholic Church,” Simi Botic said. “But also, just in general to get to watch something like this happen in our lifetime feels really special.”

Many told Spectrum News 1 they were surprised that they chose a new pope so fast.

While it’s been a special day for Catholics, one thing is certain: a new era begins for the Catholic Church.

A Catholic student from Italy who lives in Columbus said the new pope has some big shoes to fill in because Pope Francis left a huge legacy behind.

“He was the first pope that led the Church in a different direction,” Alice Ometti said. “So, he left a lot of good stuff and a new approach, and I hope that the next pope can continue this.”
