If you have a school age child you know how their homework can pile up, it can be very difficult for children but it can also be difficult for their parents.
Kids are learning differently these days, the text books are swapped out for search engines like Goggle or Ask.com. For parents who are not tech savvy helping their child with school work can be challenging.
"Many of us have difficulties, I am a parent myself, with helping our high school or middle school students in high levels of math after perhaps subject area matter that were not familiar or it's been a while since we've had it," said Heather Spatafora, Division Street Elementary School teacher.
Fourth grade teacher Heather Spatafora suggests parents and their kids who need help in any subject become familiar with websites like Kahn Academy or Teachertube. She also says kids need help organizing their studies and a family calendar where activities and assignments are outlined, will help. Also, keep an eye on long term projects; left to the last minute can create stress.
"Many students don't have the ability to organize and prioritize their work, so sitting down with your youngster and deciding when it is due and working backwards. Breaking the assignments down into small bits. Encouraging them to set a timer get up and take a break or reward themselves after they complete part of an assignment is great," Spatafora said.
According to the experts set your child up to succeed, provide them with a quiet area to do their homework but be aware, a chair and a desk may not be enough.
Be sure the desk is set up with a variety of supplies which include highlighters, scissors, correction tape to avoid erasing hazards, mechanical pencils so there no need for a sharpener and one item your child may love, a pack of sugarless chewing gum, it's believed that chewing will keep kids alert while doing their homework.
