CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two Charlotte streets will get new names in the coming months as part of the Legacy Commission’s street renaming project.

Beginning May 23, 2022, Barringer Drive will be renamed to Revolution Park Drive.

Barringer Drive was originally named for Osmond Barringer, a businessman and automotive enthusiast who reportedly had ties to white supremacy.

The new name, officials say, will honor “the history of Revolutionary Park and Dr. Charles L. Sifford Golf Course and the successful struggle to desegregate these public recreational facilities.”

On June 30, 2022, Stonewall Street, named for Confederate war general Stonewall Jackson, will be renamed Brooklyn Village Avenue.

Officials say the new name “honors the legacy of Brooklyn, a predominately black neighborhood located in Charlotte’s Second Ward. Brooklyn was its own community within the city with its own businesses, schools, churches, restaurants, shops and entertainment.”

In February 2021, the Charlotte City Council voted to adopt the recommendations of the Legacy Commission to change streets named for

Confederate leaders and people tied to white supremacy.

Other streets to be renamed include:

  • Phifer Avenue
  • Jackson Avenue
  • Zebulon Avenue
  • Aycock Lane
  • Hill Street
  • Morrison Avenue
  • Jefferson Davis Street
