CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC -- Organizers for the Flea Drop in Eastover are preparing for hundreds of people to show up to the annual event.

Since 2010, town leaders held their New Year's celebration with a countdown and a 30 pound ceramic flea drop, which signifies the town's history. In the 1800s, the community was infested with fleas and was given the name Flea Hill. In 2007, the town changed its name to Eastover.

The event on New Year's Eve will have a dance, games for the kids, and food for sale.

"We're trying to do something that allows us to get together in a wholesome way to have fun, bring folks together that we don't run into all the time, and just have a fun evening," Chairperson for the News Year's Eve Flea Drop Susan Baggett said.

The Flea Drop will be Tuesday, December 31 at 10 p.m. at the Eastover Community Center. The event is free to the public.
