CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Within minutes of the GOP announcing the date of the 2020 RNC, thousands of hotel rooms were spoken for and Airbnb rooms were filling up.

• The RNC host committee reserved about 17,000 hotel rooms in a 41-mile radius of the Spectrum Center the week of the convention
• More than 90 percent of the Airbnb rooms under $50 Aug. 24-27 were booked minutes after dates were announced
• Airbnb said there is 1,600 active hosts in Mecklenburg County

The RNC host committee reserved about 17,000 hotel rooms in a 41-mile radius of the Spectrum Center the week of the convention, as part of the RNC requirements.

Minutes after the host committee announced the date, more than 90 percent of the Airbnb rooms under $50 Aug. 24-27 were booked.

Airbnb host Vincent Montgomery believes there will be a surge in supply by 2020, as folks try to cash in on the RNC.

"I mean if they even got a spare couch they're getting this stuff ready right now,” Montgomery said.

As of Monday morning, Airbnb said there is 1,600 active hosts in Mecklenburg County.
