An Oswego County sheriff's deputy has died in a crash while on duty.
The sheriff's office said Wednesday that Deputy Cailee Campbell was involved in a crash with another vehicle just before 6:45 a.m. at the intersection of County Route 176 and Rowlee Road in Volney. Campbell, a 17-month veteran of the department, was responding to another crash when the fatal crash occurred.
Campbell was driving east on Rowlee Road, responding to a report of a motor vehicle accident on Lot 10 Road in Palermo, where a vehicle was reported off the road, the sheriff's office said. A male operator of a 2023 Toyota Highlander who was driving to work from his home was traveling south on County Route 176, where it collided with Campbell's vehicle, forcing both vehicles off the road southeast of the intersection, according to the sheriff's office.
Campbell, 33, was pronounced dead at Oswego Hospital, while the driver of the other car was taken to Upstate University Hospital with what the sheriff's office said were "non-life-threatening injuries."
A funeral service for Campbell will be held at noon Tuesday in Fulton Alliance Church, the Thomas J. Pirro Jr. Funeral Home said Thursday.
Prior to working for Oswego County, Campbell worked for the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department, starting in 2019, according to a department spokesperson.
Oswego Sheriff Don Hilton said Campbell had been doing "a fantastic job for us" during an interview outside Upstate University Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
Many law enforcement officers converged on Upstate, forming a line outside the hospital, to pay their respects to Campbell.
The sheriff's office says an investigation is underway.
