BUFFALO, N.Y. β€” Gov. Kathy Hochul joined hundreds of people in Buffalo on Saturday near the site where a mass shooting took place on May 14 at a Tops supermarket.

The Buffalo Public School District hosted a Day of Hope and Healing on Jefferson Avenue Saturday in response to that shooting.

The governor joined Mayor Bryon Brown and other local leaders for the event.

They honored the victims of the shooting and shared signs of hope that East Buffalo is on the mend.

"We're also investing in changing the landscape of this community,” Hochul said. β€œThe businesses -- the corridor -- the Jefferson Avenue corridor -- to bring it back, so it's one of the hot spots of Buffalo once again. People are going to come here to celebrate our re-birth."

Those in attendance also got access to health check-ups, COVID testing and vaccines for kids five and under.

Organizers handed out over 3,000 backpacks and non-perishable food items for families in need.
