Schools officials from Buffalo Creek Academy said the school will close at the end of the year.
SUNY's Board of Trustees voted on the closure, pointing to a number of reasons, including low academic performance, fiscal concerns and students consistently missing class.
Buffalo Creek Academy founder and CEO Dr. Chris Manning made the announcement via social media.
"We regret to inform BCA families that the SUNY Board of Trustees has just voted to close our close at the end of this year. This does not reflect the hard work of our staff, board, students and families. You all came and made Buffalo Creek Academy a reality. We were born during the pandemic. While we hoped that context would provide us an opportunity to truly show our capacity, we did not receive the short-term renewal we were seeking. Thank you to all BCA families for your advocacy and trust. You all made calls, sent emails, and many travelled nearly 400 miles to be there to support our request for renewal. Your work was not in vain. Our children were watching and they saw their classmates, parents, and community stand up for them."
School officials say they will work to ensure that all students are placed in a school so there no disruption of their education.
"We will work to ensure that all students are placed in a school to ensure there is no disruption of their education. I am sorry to report this news and will work to ensure a smooth transition for all families," Manning continued.
The charter school opened in 2020 during the pandemic to serve students in grades 5-8.
