Farm workers in Western New York are calling for union leaders detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be released.

On Friday, members of the United Farm Workers rallied outside a federal ICE detention facility located in the city of Batavia in Genesee County.

They say they received a call early Friday saying ICE had pulled over a transport bus on its way to work in Albion.

Names were allegedly called from a list and those people were taken into custody in unmarked vans.

According to the union, they were organizing with those workers who are being detained.

Initially, the workers were able to contact the union, but they have since stopped reaching out.

The union says it is seeking counsel to represent them.

"This rally was put together as a means to put pressure on ICE, let them know that we're here to stand with workers, that the community wants them released as well," Gabriella Szpunt, NY organizing coordinator, United Farm Workers, said. "Because in the absence of our presence, the powers that be would assume that no one cares about these workers and that this community wants them to be out of this country, which is not the case, as demonstrated by these supporters."

ICE sent Spectrum News 1 a statement Monday, saying:

"During a targeted enforcement operation on May 2, in Albion, New York, ICE Buffalo arrested 14 aliens from Mexico and Guatemala who are all in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act, three of which are immigrations fugitives who have been ordered removed from the United States.

All 14 aliens are detained in ICE custody pending their removal proceedings."
