Some preservationists and Brooklyn residents are trying to get the city to create a new historic district in the borough.

They have started a petition to landmark the area between Eastern Parkway and St. Johns Place from Washington Avenue to Plaza Street. They want to call it the "Prospect Heights Apartment House District".

The six blocks contain 107 apartment houses built between 1909 and 1929 . Organizers say the area represents one of the first "modern" apartment house neighborhoods in the borough.

"It's to prevent developers tearing down historic buildings and building up because of the air rights. Building up on top of tenants that have lived in the area. "said petition supporter Delissa Reynolds.

The group hopes to collect 2,000 signatures.
