MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Following the migrant bus crash that killed eight people and left dozens injured in Marion County, members of the community are working together to figure out how to help them, and their families.
One thing is for certain, that when people need help, the call will be answered.
At The Coupon Kid Sales & Liquidation, owner James Brandl says word spread fast of Tuesday’s deadly crash involving a bus full of farm workers.
“As soon as we heard it, we talked around the community to see, 'Do we know anything? How can we help right away?'” Brandl said.
Brandl’s Facebook group has more than 15,000 members.
He shared the Cannon Farms post about the crash and reached out to his followers, letting them know he wants to give back.
“So, if there’s anyone who wants to get in contact with me, I’d love to get with another organization or anyone who can point me in the right direction on how we can help as a small business,” Brandl said.
The Mexican Consulate in Orlando says their staff are making emergency phone numbers available and looking for information about the crash victims and their family members.
Meanwhile, other organizations have started to raise money online.
“There’s something we’ve got to be able to do,” Brandl said.
As for Cannon Farms, their location will be closed Wednesday.
The farm closed Tuesday after the owners learned about the bus crash.
The migrants onboard the bus were heading to Cannon Farms to work for the day.
