The Week in Review

1. Lawmakers on edge as statehouse security tightens after Minnesota shootings

Anxious lawmakers convened Wednesday under heightened security in Wisconsin’s state Capitol, one of the most publicly accessible statehouses in the country, days after a legislator and her husband in neighboring Minnesota were shot and killed at their home and others were targeted. Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said Wednesday that it was important to “take a breath” and not have a “knee-jerk reaction” to the Minnesota shootings.

2. Prosecutors say cyanide poisonings led to hazmat investigations

A Wisconsin man and woman are accused of plotting to kill several of the man’s ex-girlfriends by poisoning them with cyanide. The case prompted a huge police and hazmat response at three different homes in Madison earlier this week. Those homes are on North Spooner Street, Skyline Drive and South Highlands Avenue.

3. MPS teacher’s aide Yessenia Ruano has self-deported

A Milwaukee public school teacher’s aide is on her way back to El Salvador after self-deporting, according to Voces de la Frontera. With a pending T-Visa application, meant for trafficking victims, the Milwaukee immigrant advocacy group said Yessenia Ruano and her twin daughters made the decision to leave on Tuesday, June 17.

4. Ron Johnson says big GOP tax and spending bill could be done by August recess, not July 4

Sen. Ron Johnson didn’t support the House measure and says he is not in favor of the legislation crafted by Senate Republican leaders, either. Republicans have set a self-imposed deadline of July 4 to get a final bill to the President’s desk. But Johnson said Republicans will need more time, likely until August.

5. 'I love my time here': Mark Murphy talks Packers' legacy, Ed Policy taking over

This summer, Mark Murphy will hand off the presidency of the Packers to Ed Policy. Spectrum News 1's Dennis Krause sat down with Murphy ahead of the formal end of his tenure at the Packers shareholders meeting in July.
