GRAPEVINE, Texas — State officials held a press conference on Wednesday to update the public about the jet ski hit-and-run that killed an 18-year-old teenager.
Ava Moore, 18, was struck by a jet ski while in her kayak on Grapevine Lake on Sunday, May 25, according to a news release from the Texas Game Wardens and the Grapevine Police Department.
The Texas Game Wardens and the Grapevine Police Department announced on Tuesday that Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 21, was arrested in connection with the incident.
Gonzalez allegedly fled the scene with Maikel Alexander Coello-Perozo, 21, and they struck two vehicles while leaving the area, according to officials. Perozo was also arrested on Tuesday.
In a news release, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated that Gonzalez and Perozo are undocumented immigrants.
“My heart breaks for Ava’s family and friends, and my prayers are with them as they face this tragedy,” said Paxton in a statement. “My office will continue to work with local, state, and national law enforcement partners to secure justice for Ava.”
Initial details released by authorites indicated that the jet ski that hit Moore had two women on it.
The woman who was operating the jet ski fled the scene with a man, who then crashed his vehicle into another car before fleeing, according to authorities. The other woman on the jet ski stayed behind and spoke with first responders.
The Grapevine Police Department is investigating the ensuing car crash while the Texas Game Wardens is leading the investigation into the jet ski crash.
